Entertainment company Cirque du Soleil provide Londoners with a second spellbinding show for 2013 – the first being Kooza in January. One of the company’s most popular productions, Alegria focuses on power, the handing down of power over time and the evolution from ancient monarchies to modern democracies.

Against the backdrop of these themes and through the use of contortion, synchronised trapeze, fire-knife dance and hand balancing – to name just a few – an array of characters play out the story: the Clowns, witnesses to the passing of the centuries, provide an endearing and child-like aura that turns the world into a circus; Nymphs, youthful and ethereal, they exude beauty as they glide across the stage; and the White Singer – whose alter ego, The Black Singer, also features – the storyteller who echoes what she sees in the form of song.
